Comfort At The Extremes (CATE)

THE COMFORT AT THE EXTREME CONFERENCES BEGAN IN 2019 AS A BROADER EXTENSION OF THE WINDSOR CONFERENCES.

The first CATE conference was held on 10th and 11th April 2019 at Heriot-Watt University in Dubai to facilitate knowledge exchange on energy, economy, and climate. Scientific works and talks that instigate thought on how buildings, cities, and shelters could provide not only comfort but also thermal safety and deliver occupant health in a warming world were encouraged for participation.

The 2021 CATE Conference was held from 24-26 October 2021 at the College of Engineering, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. This conference stressed the urgent need for and importance of researching the best pathways to adapt to the impacts of changing climates. It also focused on research surrounding energy systems and societal pressures on the sustainability and resilience of built environments, ecosystems, and countries.

The following year CATE conference was held in Edinburgh on 5-6 September 2022. In the wake of the pandemic, the conference initiated discussion on ways in which the pandemic has altered design decisions surrounding buildings. With the tagline- 'Climate Change, COVID and Ventilation', it invited the exchange of scientific knowledge on emerging research, new thinking, and innovative design developments to keep people safe, healthy, and affordably comfortable in built environments.

The last CATE conference took place from December 13 to 15, 2023, in Ahmedabad, India. The increasing intensity and frequency of meteorological phenomena, as a result of climate change, have led to climatic extremes. The recent pandemic has further exacerbated these conditions, presenting new challenges in combating climate change. Ahmedabad brought together various groups to discuss interdisciplinary solutions and strategies aimed at climate change and associated extreme events, addressing these challenges at different scales.

University of Seville

FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OF HISTORY SINCE ITS FOUNDATION AS THE COLLEGE OF SANTA MARÍA DE JESÚS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 16TH CENTURY

The University of Seville has gone through different stages. There are moments in them, such as the crisis of the 19th century or the Civil War and subsequent Franco dictatorship, that have stood out for the difficulty of teaching. However, the positive periods of the US are greater, in which it has managed to position itself as a reference university in all its functions and successfully adapt to the European Higher Education Area.

Throughout its history, the University of Seville has managed to safeguard a large artistic heritage made up of more than 5,000 thousand pieces, which are available to researchers and are part of the university environment and the city. It includes magnificent archaeological and numismatic collections, pieces from the 16th century, academic drawings from the 18th and 19th centuries and a very rich photographic collection. It is also worth highlighting its bibliographic and documentary heritage, made up of 332 incunabula and numerous pieces of scientific material.

WHERE FUTURE ARCHITECTS ARE BEING SHAPED

The ETS of Architecture of Seville is one of the oldest in Spain, standing out, compared to other schools, for its special emphasis on technical training. This is also already a distinctive feature of Spanish graduates compared to those from other countries, here the title of architect is general and architects are trained who are highly prepared for the integration of all the aspects that influence the whole of a building, from the ideation to constructive detail. The emphasis on technique especially qualifies the architect from Seville, who, if he wishes, can easily find work in Europe.

For the development of studies, the School of Architecture of the University of Seville has advanced facilities: in addition to the graphic classrooms, it adds one of the largest libraries of the University and a very specialized offer of laboratories , which includes the FabLab Digital Manufacturing Laboratory , at the forefront of manufacturing and digital equipment for the elaboration of architectural models.
